Kolkata IPL team crushed Bangalore Royal Challengers (test team) in a one sided twenty20 match at Chinnaswamy stadium in Bangalore. Kolkata defeated Bangalore by a big margin of 140 runs. Batting first, Kolkata IPL scored 222/3 in 20 overs thanks to magnificent 158 not out by Brendon McCullum. But Ricky Ponting and Sourav Ganguly failed to entertain the crowds. In response, Bangalore IPL was all out for 82 runs in 15.1 overs.

Bangalore people may find it difficult to digest their team’s lack of fighting spirit. Except all-rounder Praveen kumar, not even a single Bangalore batsman has shown minimum fighting spirit and application in facing Kolkata Knight Riders. Shahrukh Khan is the happiest man on earth after seeing the wonderful all-round performance by his team. Kolkata IPL outclassed Bangalore IPL in batting, bowling and fielding.

Bangalore challengers started their innings in horrible way by losing 4 wickets for 24 runs in 6 overs. Test stars like Rahul Dravid, Jacques Kallis and Wasim Jaffer failed miserably along with Indian under-19 captain Virat Kohli. India young sensation, Ishant Sharma terrorised Dravid, Kallis and Jaffer in his initial overs. Even experienced hard hitter Mark Boucher fell cheaply to Kolkata captain Sourav Ganguly.

IPL started in a spectacular fashion at Chinnaswamy stadium which was well attended by famous cricket dignitaries. Music show by Shankar Mahadevan and Laser show enthralled the Bangalore crowds. But McCullum innings overshadowed all these things.

IPL Match analysis:

Toss: Bangalore Royal Challengers won the toss and elected to field.

Highlights of the match:

1. Brendon McCullum gave sensational start to this prestigious tournament by hitting 18 runs in the Zaheer Khan’s over. He hit 10 fours and 13 sixers in his memorable innings.

2. Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid clearly struggled in their brief stay at crease and these icons are big burden for their franchisees (That’s why Dhoni doesn’t like these seniors).

3. Bangalore cricket lovers may find it difficult to forget wonderful century by Brendon McCullum.

4. Praveen Kumar is the only Bangalore batsman to reach double digits in their innings. He is the only bangalore bowler who troubled Kolkata batsmen in his first spell.

IPL Records:

1. This twenty20 match will be remembered forever as the first game of Indian premier League Cricket tournament.

2. Brendon McCullum scored first century of IPL cricket tournament.

3. McCullum’s 158 is highest ever score in the twenty20 cricket history.

4. McCullum hit highest number of sixers (13 sixers) in a single 20-20 innings.

5. Cameroon White gave 24 runs in a single over. IPL record.

IPL Scores:

Kolkata Knight Riders: 222/3 in 20 overs.
Bangalore Royal Challengers: 82 all out in 15.1 overs.

IPL Teams:

Kolkata Knight Riders:

Sourav Ganguly (Captain), Brendon McCullum (Wicket keeper), Ricky Ponting, Mohammad Hafeez, David Hussey, Debabrata Das, W. Saha, Ajit Agarkar, Ishant Sharma, Murali Karthik and Laxmi Ratan Shukla.

Bangalore Royal Challengers:

Rahul Dravid (Captain), Mark Boucher (Wicket Keeper), Cameroon White, Jacques Kallis, Wasim Jaffer, B. Akhil, Virat Kohli, Ashley Noffke, Zaheer Khan, Sunil Joshi and Praveen Kumar.
My opinion: Rahul Dravid and other managers misguided energetic Vijay Mallya in selecting ideal twenty20 team for Royal Challengers. They picked wonderful test team. Vijay Mallya was deceived by these cricket brains. Dravid should learn lessons from Laxman (Laxman sacrificed his iconic status for the benefit of his team). Mallya learned a big cricket lesson in the best possible way.

IPL authorities may have felt happy after seeing superb century by Brendon McCullum but unhappy after seeing worst performance by Bangalore IPL team.

It all started wrong for the Rajasthan Royals when their captain Shane Warne called wrong at the toss, and his Mumbai Indians counterpart Shaun Pollock asked his team to take first strike on a pitch that looked a batting beauty, albeit with a few cracks. Shane Warne wasn’t unduly worried about batting first, and conceded that if his batsmen posted a big score, his team had the wherewithal to tie down the hosts.

After starting tight in the first couple of overs, Shaun Pollock beat his ex-captain Graeme Smith with good change of pace, and had him stumped by Yogesh Takawale on the second attempt. The loss of his opening partner didn’t seem to have any effect on the diminutive Swapnil Asnodkar, who continued playing his natural game, eliciting comparisons with the little dynamite Romesh Kaluwitharana from Sri Lanka. The other big draw for the Royals so far in the tournament, Yusuf Pathan tried to whip a full delivery from Ashish Nehra only to miss the ball and find his middle stump uprooted. Shane Watson, the Royals’ leading run scorer in the tournament walked out to bat with his team in a spot of bother at 21 for 2 in the fourth over, and went about doing the consolidation with Asnodkar. The duo added 53 runs in 5.4 overs, when Watson (32) played a reckless stroke and dragged the ball back onto his stumps.

This was the opening the hosts needed, and from thereon, they kept picking up wickets at regular intervals. Lesser-experienced bowlers like Dhawal Kulkarni and Rohan Raje used change of pace to good effect and picked up two wickets apiece, while Ashish Nehra (3-19) and Dwayne Bravo (2-12) combined well and cleaned up the tail. Change of pace did the trick for the hosts; as many as four Royals’ wickets fell to slower ones or ones that were marginally quicker than normal deliveries. The visitors were shot for 103, their lowest score in the tournament, with as many as 22 deliveries remaining in their allotted 20 overs. Asnodkar was top scorer with 39, while as many as eight other batsmen were dismissed for single digit scores.

Credit should also go to the Mumbai Indians fielders, for they were sharp on the field today. Yogesh Takawale, the wicketkeeper, who had a hand in the dismissal of Graeme Smith at the top of the innings, pulled off two sharp chances later on, one running backward and then diving forward, and one diving forward to send back Ravindra Jadeja and Mahesh Rawat respectively.

Faced with a target of 104, the Mumbai Indians’ went about their task of knocking off the runs in a very calm manner – very unusual in Twenty20 cricket. The first three overs only produced eight runs, and just as the required run rate was inching closer to the six-runs-per-over mark, Munaf Patel’s second over (fourth over of the innings) went for 13 runs, and the Mumbai Indians again had things under control.

The opening pair of Yogesh Takawale and Sanath Jayasuriya put together 41 runs in 45 balls, when Jayasuriya, who was just getting into his stride, holed out to Yusuf Pathan on the mid wicket fence. Shane Warne introduced himself into the attack later than most expected, but he needed very little time to get amongst the wickets; Yogesh Takawale didn’t read his first delivery, the quickish zooter and went back to cut it, only to miss it and have his off stump pegged back; he would be dismissed for a well-compiled 27. Dwayne Bravo’s short stay at the wicket saw him let off once at short cover, but he failed to capitalise on that let-off and soon holed out to the man at short midwicket. It was left to the Mumbai Indians’ Bangalore-import Robin Uthappa and the impressive local lad Abhishek Nayar to see the home team through. Uthappa finished with 34 runs, while Nayar remained unbeaten on 12.

Mumbai Indians, by virtue of the 7-wicket win here at the DY Patil Sports Stadium in Navi Mumbai, move into fifth place in the points table, while the Rajasthan Royals, although equal on points with Kings XI Punjab, slip down one place to second by virtue of a lower net run rate.

A beaming Shaun Pollock credited teamwork for the shocking win of Mumbai Indians over Delhi Daredevils by 29 runs in a Indian Premier League (IPL) Twenty20 cricket match here Sunday.

Daredevils captain Virendra Sehwag, top scorer with 40, bemoaned the lack of application from his batsmen that saw them fall short of a modest total of 162.

Pollock, leading in the absence of regular skipper Sachin Tendulkar, felt that even after the early successes Mumbai Indians enjoyed, with the early wickets of Gautam Gambhir and Shikhar Dhawan, the match was wide open till demolition man Sehwag was at the crease. ‘The wicket of Sehwag was the turning point in the match,’ he said.

Pollock felt that it was just a matter of time before Mumbai Indians got their act together and said that the win over Kolkata Knight Riders galvanised the team into a fighting machine. ‘Every player is now adding to the team effort. The younger players too are coming in and doing the job that is required of them. We still have Sachin to come in to the side,’ Pollock told the reporters.

It was Pollock’s knock of 33 that gave Mumbai Indians a respectable score of 162 and Pollock felt, ‘the wicket had a bit in it and we were confident we could put the pressure on Daredevils if we got some early wickets, and that is what happened.’

On the other hand, Sehwag felt that the failure by the opening pair to give the Daredevils a good start added to the pressure on the rest of the batting line-up. Sehwag also rued the fact that he did not get enough deliveries to face in the first six overs when the power-play was on.

He felt that his bowlers had done a superb job of restricting Mumbai Indians to 162, which was not a huge score in Twenty20 cricket, but the batting failed to do its job. ‘After the early loss of wickets it was always going to be a tough job to get the runs and the need of the hour was sensible batting, but we lost it.’

Left-arm seamer Zaheer Khan was named one of the Five Cricketers of the Year in this year’s Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack published on Wednesday.

In what is arguably the oldest individual honour in the game’s history, Zaheer was joined by West Indians Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Ottis Gibson, now England’s bowling coach, and the England pair of Ian Bell and Ryan Sidebottom in the elite list.

All five were rewarded for their performance in the past English season.

The last time an Indian made it to the chart was in 2002 when VVS Laxman was named alongside Andy Flower, Adam Gilchrist, Jason Gillespie and Damien Martyn.

Zaheer was particularly impressive during his stint with Worcestershire.

Meanwhile, South African batting mainstay Jacques Kallis was adjudged the Leading Cricketer in the World for 2007.
